48V lithium battery packs: how to choose

Forty-eight-volt systems serve home storage, larger solar systems and light electric vehicles. The voltage brings efficiency and power, and it brings design questions that 12V systems do not. This guide covers them.

First, understand what 48V means in cell terms. A 48V LiFePO4 pack is typically 15 or 16 cells in series, giving a nominal voltage around 48V to 51.2V depending on the cell count; a 48V Li-ion pack built from 18650 cells is typically 13 cells in series at 48.1V nominal, as on this site's 48V 15Ah e-bike pack, which lists a 54.6V maximum charge voltage and a 35.75V discharge cut-off. A buyer must therefore check the system's voltage window — the range the inverter, motor controller or charger accepts — against the pack's nominal, maximum and cut-off voltages, not just against the label 48V.

Second, size by energy and by current together. A 48V 15Ah pack stores about 720 watt-hours, which suits a light electric vehicle or a small storage system, while a home storage system typically needs several kilowatt-hours and therefore a much larger pack or several packs in parallel. Current matters as well: the 48V e-bike pack on this site lists a 30A maximum continuous discharge current, which must cover the motor's peak draw, not just its average. A home storage pack's current requirement follows from the inverter's power rating divided by the voltage, and a buyer who sizes on capacity alone may find the pack cannot deliver the inverter's peak.

Third, treat protection and balancing as essential, not optional, at 48V. With 13 to 16 cells in series, a single weak cell can unbalance the pack, and a management board that balances cells and watches temperature is part of the system, not an accessory. The BMS guide and the custom BMS solution page on this site explain the board choices in general terms; the exact board for a 48V pack should be confirmed for that pack in writing, including its discharge current rating and its temperature handling.

Fourth, plan the installation. A 48V pack is heavier and larger than a 12V pack of the same capacity class — the 48V 15Ah pack on this site is 4.6 kg with customised dimensions — and a home storage pack is heavier still. Check the mounting, the ventilation, the cable runs and the charger's location before ordering, and confirm the charger's voltage and chemistry match the pack: a 48V LiFePO4 charger and a 48V Li-ion charger are different products even when their labels look similar.

How to place an inquiry, step by step

  1. Send the device facts. Tell us the device type, the available space (length, width and maximum thickness), the nominal voltage you need, the capacity or runtime you target, and the peak current if your device has motors, radios or heaters.
  2. Name the model or the chemistry. If a page on this site matches, quote its model description and listing details. If nothing matches, say so and describe the chemistry and voltage you need, so the conversation starts on the custom route.
  3. Confirm documents and terms in writing. Ask for the certificate set for that exact model, confirm the minimum order, the price basis and the lead time for that listing, and confirm payment and warranty terms before you pay. Terms stated for one model listing do not transfer to another model.
  4. Agree the sample step. Confirm whether the next step is a listed sample, an engineering sample for a custom design, or a small trial order, and what test you will run on arrival — fit in the enclosure, runtime, or peak-current behaviour.

Send all of this in one message through the contact page: device type, space, voltage, capacity, peak current, model description if you have one, and the documents you need. That is the whole inquiry — no separate form, no account, no extra step.

What to send us now

Send one message with your device type, the space the pack must fit, the voltage and capacity you need, the peak current if it matters, and the model description if a page on this site already matches. Add the documents you need — certificates are available upon request — and whether you need a listed model or a custom design. Use the contact page or write to [email protected], or call +86-755-25629920. A specific message like that is what turns a range of hundreds of models into a short, answerable question.
